Michelle Phillips is an accomplished Corporate and International Financial Services Executive with extensive experience in US and Canadian markets.
Currently, Michelle holds the position of Execution Head & Director, Healthcare and Diversified at Scotiabank, Canada’s 3rd largest financial institution and the Country’s most international A+ rated bank with over 90,000 employees and 23 million customers across the globe and $856Bn in assets. Located in Toronto, she works with a team of 7 individuals while presenting large ($75mm+) structured deals to corporate credit. With a portfolio size of $13Bn and over 100 investment grade Borrowers, she covers U.S. Healthcare, and Borrowers in the Manufacturing, Retail, Engineering, and Commodity focused sectors in the US. This position encompasses several critical banking areas from sales & marketing, Borrower analysis and structuring to the presentation of bankable deals. In addition, other responsibilities include ongoing monitoring of the portfolio for credit quality and returns including the compilation of an annual US Healthcare industry outlook that is used bank-wide. Key to the ongoing success of the team, Michelle has the responsibility to recruit, train and manage a group of highly motivated individuals.
Michelle’s area expertise is in successfully building and overseeing an investment grade quality portfolio of assets for the bank in the US healthcare and Diversified industries. By building wide and deep strategic partnerships throughout the bank and combining this with excellent analytical and deal structuring skills (including 3 years of work out experience), she is able to successfully generate ongoing profitable business division for the Bank. Known for her ability to work in a team-based capacity and to get the deal done, Michelle is a connection point with all stakeholders to effectively present viable and lucrative deals. Michelle is the go to person for this subsector of US banking. She also has extensive experience in the analysis and adjudication of credit policy, regulatory and in risk determination having spent over 10 years in a corporate credit/work out capacity.
Michelle has extensive work experience in Large A-rated Financial Institutions in both Canada and the US covering banking, corporate finance, structuring, documentation negotiation, industry analysis and credit approval.
Michelle holds an M.B.A. degree from the University of Toronto/Rotman School of Management (Dean’s List), with a specialization in Finance. She also has an Honor’s Bachelor of Science (4 year) degree from the University of Toronto, Canada. Subsequent to graduation, Michelle also obtained her Canadian securities license in Toronto and is an active participant in ongoing bank/finance related skills development including regulatory, OFAC, compliance, US and Canadian Loan documentation, Anti-Money Laundering, leadership, coaching and management training.
